UpdateHave you talked data lately?

More than 600 data management professionals came together in Tampa, Florida to learn, teach, and share about all facets of our practice. Individual sessions spilled over into hallway networking.Dinner discussions converged on topics, giving voice to a myriad of perspectives, each enriching the next conversation. Some of these conversations have continued beyond Enterprise Data World (EDW)into the LinkedIn DAMA Group. Consider the value of joining the conversation virtually, even if you were unable to travel thisyear.

The weekend before EDW was a busy one for the Board of Directors and for the DAMA President’s Council. Two days of marathon meetings face to face has helped clarify our current state andbegin to define our opportunities as an organization for the next year. Minutes for the meetings are still in progress at the time of this publication.

During the conference, the audience and the speakers alike could envision a bright future for data management. In spite of the disruption of the markets, or possibly because of it, ouropportunities to show the value of managing data as a durable asset appear to be at a tipping point.

Four colleagues were honored by DAMA at the conference for their contributions. The winners of the 2009 DAMA International Achievement Awards are:

Academic – Eva Smith

Professional – Jaylene McCandlish

Government – Glenn Thomas

Community – Mark Mosley

Thanks to all who nominated one or more candidates and thanks to all chapters that voted.

The biggest buzz at EDW was the introduction of The DAMA Data Management Body of Knowledge, a reference to provide us the written documentation for what we doin the functional areas of our practice. Approximately 100 copies of the DAMA-DMBOK were sold, as well as a few enterprise licenses. Since then it has been moving quickly at Amazon, if you see thatit is “sold out” check back…we restock quickly.

The forward by John Zachman includes the following quote:

The DAMA-DMBOK Guide deserves a place on every data management professional’s bookshelf; and for the general manager, it will serve as a guide for setting expectations and assigning responsibilities for managing and practicing what has become the very most critical resource owned by an enterprise as it (the enterprise) progresses into the Information Age: DATA!

It is now available through Amazon, for a list price of $54.95 for the one CD. Volume discounts and enterprise licensecopies are available through our publisher.
