Not what you are thinking.
This is not a survey focused on determining whether or not the Data Governance function should or can reside in the Information Technology area of your organization and be successful. Some people say it can (I am in that camp) and some say it cannot. We all know that the answer to where the DG function should reside is … It depends.
If Big Data Governance is the governance of Big Data — and Metadata Governance is the governance of Metadata — then IT Data Governance is the governance of IT Data.
What is “IT Data”?
IT Data is simply the data, information, and knowledge that is required to operate IT as an efficient and effective business support function. IT Data is data about hardware, software, licenses, vendors, intellectual property, configurations, networks, incidents, storage/backup, project portfolios, analytical models, system components, … just to name several areas. IT Data also includes relationships between these things. The list includes “anything that IT needs data about” in order to operate and support the organization.
Why this Survey? Why Now?
Governing IT Data as an asset is not a priority at many organizations. Should it be? Will it be? What exactly will it mean if and when the time is right to evolve Data Governance to cover IT Data? Will present programs be able to cover the governance of IT Data? Are there best practices, tools, roles and metrics associated with governing IT Data?
There are many questions that are presently unanswered. That is the reason for this survey.
The survey is short and to the point. This survey is intended to be taken by people in organizations that direct and manage the use of information technologies to support their business. These people include the Chief Information Officer (CIO), Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Chief Data Officer (CDO) and all of their Vice Presidents, Directors and Managers. Other Officers are certainly welcome as well as anybody with insight into governing the IT Data that flows through their part of the organization.
Did I just eliminate you? I hope not. I encourage you to show enough interest in the survey and IT Data Governance to share a printable version of the survey with the CIO, CDO, etc., so that we can gain their input to answer the questions I mention in the survey.
The results of the survey will be shared with every person that completes the survey. A summary of survey results will be made available through TDAN.com in a future issue.
